Valentine's Math Center: DIY

Hi there! It's Michelle from Apples and ABC's.  I want to share an easy DIY math center that you can make for you kids!  We are learning how to count numbers 1-30 right now in my Kinder class.  I drew some 30 frames inside a heart and wrote a number at the bottom of each page.  Then I bound about 6 different sheets together so they could flip through and practice different numbers.  On each page the students place that many objects in the 10 frame boxes.  Here are the materials:

-mini objects {I used Valentine's erasers from the Target dollar bin}

-fine motor tweezers {they can just use their hands}

-30 frame sheets

I placed this at a center for math time and the kids had a blast!  I don't always have them use the tweezers, but when we do use them they get to excited.  I stress how these make their hands stronger so they can become better writers.

February Fun! Snow Globes + Penguin Art

Hope you're having an awesome weekend! Debbie Clement here, rainbow-lady.

As I type, I'm in Ohio looking out the window at an ever mounting pile of snow. At this very minute its just the type of snow that lingers in a snow globe. 

I saw these awesome snow globes on a bulletin board display a couple weeks back on one of my Author/Illustrator school visits in Florida. There are several things that I LUV LUV LUV about this project. 

• The back drop of 'snow' is created in an open-ended/process manner -- where every student will be successful. Run the marble thru the white paint across the blue paper and VOILA: instant delight! Cause and effect + science!
• The teachers have allowed the students to create their own projects independently -- as evidenced by the snowmen slightly askew and individualized. 
• The final 'presentation' of the work is truly worthy of posterity. 

Sharing the very same bulletin board were these Perky Penguins, which would be absolutely perfect for a Valentine focus of hearts tied to your winter-animals unit.

"Red, White and Blue" 

which would be a perfect addition to your President's Day observations. I do have a digital version of the song, that includes the sign language and music notation in a zipped file at TpT. Snowman Freebies!

I am so excited to be contributing to this blog!

Today I'm going to share with you some last minute Winter FUN! If you've already wrapped up your winter theme, then I surely hope you can use these ideas next year :)

We made this cute snowman craft I found on pinterest. I couldn't locate the original source because the pin was "dead" (invalid). So if you know where this idea came from please let me know so I can give proper credit. 

I had them write each letter in their name on the circles- hence, the reason I had to white it out. You can also have them write numbers 1-10, or numbers for skip counting 5-50, or 10- 100. The ideas are endless! We used a q-tip with white paint for the "snow". If you don't have q-tips handy you can use the eraser of the pencil instead.

We also worked on this melted snowman craft. We traced and cut 4 circles and overlapped them. I also pre- cut buttons using a 1.5" circle puncher. 

They both forgot the word "in". YIKES. 

Love this one! It was "hot, hot hot!".

Valentine CVC Freebie

Hi everyone!  This is Julie from Make, Take & Teach.  I'm so happy to be one of the educational bloggers contributing to KinderLand.  We have so many creative kindergarten teachers (and those who love kindergarten), willing to share ideas and activities with literally the whole world!  My little niche is developing activities for small group instruction and intervention.  So, in the spirit of Valentine's Day, I'd like to share with you an activity that I made for helping our beginning readers decode consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words.  This activity is great for use during your small group intervention or it can be used as an activity within your literacy centers.

Numbers to Sets

Happy Martin Luther King Day.  I had the day off but haven't accomplished much.  I did manage to upload this freebie for all of you.

Although it is almost February, I still have a few friends who are struggling with the one-ton-one correspondence and matching numbers to sets.  I know I can't be be the only kindergarten teacher who is having this issue.  Here is a little activity I used as an assessment to see just where they are.

 

I had my kids cut everything out and then match numbers to set, in order before they could glue it down.  It's quick, easy and very telling of which one of your little friends is still struggling.  Just click the picture to download a copy.

Valentine's Letter Hunt

Hello Kinderland!  I am Michelle from Apples and ABC's and I am so excited to share my first post with you!

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and I am always looking for different manipulatives to add to my language arts and math bins.  Each month I do some sort of "letter hunt" activity where the students look for letters and write the ones they find.  Let me show you what I mean...
My FAVORITE place to shop for manipulatives is the dollar section at Target.  They always have seasonal goodies for the best price!  I found these puffy heart stickers last week...

I took an empty paint cup and filled it with the heart stickers.  I added some small blocks with letters printed on the sides.  The students can read the letters though the clear plastic and write them down.

The students used a white board to record the letters that they saw thorough the cup.  You don't have to use blocks, you can write letters on card stock or anything that can withstand a "gentle" kinder shake.  :)  I also switch it up write numbers or sight words on the blocks too!  The options are endless!
